All tracks on Celluloid Rock have
channels reversed to the same tracks on the Memory
release Elvis Sings Girls! Girls! Girls!, with Elvis' vocals in either the left or right
channel. A better stereo image with Elvis' vocal
centred, is presented on the same tracks on FTD's Girls! Girls! Girls! extended soundtrack, Double Features
- Kid Galahad / Girls! Girls! Girls!, Elvis
Chante Leiber & Stoller, and There's
Always Me Volume 2.
Track 23 on the Memory release Elvis
Sings Girls! Girls! Girls! has 'Earth
Boy' listed as "master version - splice
of takes 2 & 4", but this is actually
MO Take 9 (record version master).
Track 12 on the Memory release The
Elvis Acetates Volume 2 - Girls! Girls! Girls! has 'Earth
Boy' listed as "MO-04 or
02", but this is actually the undubbed movie
version with the count-in for NO Take 2.
The movie Version of 'Earth
Boy' has extra
spoken vocals by Elvis in between the backup vocals,
probably recorded on the movie set.
'Dainty Little Moonbeams' / 'Girls! Girls! Girls!' - end title composite master on the Memory
release The Elvis Acetates Volume 2 - Girls!
Girls! Girls! (track 10) has the count-in
for 'Dainty Little Moonbeams' (PO) Take 6.
The movie version of 'I Don't Wanna Be Tied'
is spliced from Take 8 (master) and the intro
of Take 10. The acetate of the movie version on the Memory release The Elvis
Acetates Volume 2 - Girls! Girls! Girls! has the count-in for Take 8.
The first officially released master of 'Plantation
Rock' on Elvis - A Legendary Performer Volume 4 was
spliced from the same takes (a few seconds more
of Take 17 was used, and the "And now you're
right at home" part from the Insert was not
used). A Life In Music states that this is incorrectly
edited, but also incorrectly states that it is
presented on Double Features - Kid Galahad /
Girls! Girls! Girls! as it appeared on the original
lacquer.
Some differences how the same takes were spliced
differently on other releases are as follows (timings
include the count-in):
Elvis - A Legendary Performer Volume 4 (1:52) = Take
17 (0:03 - 1:11) / Insert Take NA (0:22 - 1:05). "Add some pep, double step (laugh)..." used, "And now you're right at home..." not used.
Double Features (1:51) = Take 17 (0:03 - 1:00)
/ Insert Take NA (0:11 - 1:03). This splice was
also used on the Memory Records release Elvis
Sings Girls Girls Girls (track 31). Elvis' laugh
after "Add some pep, double step ..." not used, "And now you're right at home..." used.
Elvis Sings Girls! Girls! Girls! (Memory)(1:57) = Take
17 (0:00 - 1:11) / Insert Take NA (0:11 - 1:03). "Add some pep, double step (laugh)..." used, "And now you're right at home..." used too. This alternate splice from acetate can
be found on the Memory Records release Elvis
Sings Girls Girls Girls (track 34), and
also includes the count-in for Take 17. The same
acetate was first released on the bootleg Memphis
Tennessee but without the count-in. This would
have been considered to be the original master
splice, as an acetate was cut in the studio at
that time (original lacquer - as noted above by
Ernst Jørgensen), and it's this splice
that is used on FTD's Girls! Girls! Girls! extended
soundtrack as well as Sony's Complete Elvis Presley
Masters collection.
When 'Plantation Rock' was first released on the bootleg Plantation Rock in 1979 it was artificially extended to 4:18.
Sessions III lists 'Plantation Rock' as
being recorded on March 23 1962, but I cannot
understand why track RO would be recorded before
the rest of the session.
The instrumental of 'Mama' (SO) was originally
intended to be overdubbed by The Jordanaires,
but was eventually not used.
In March of 2007, Sony decided to go through all of Elvis' masters. They retransferred everything and remastered all tracks including repairing as many clicks, pops, bad edits and dropouts as they could. They have used these newly mastered recordings on their new releases since 2007 including budget soundtracks, Legacy releases, the 30 disc Complete Elvis Presley Masters collection and the Franklin Mint package.
