RCA's session log for this session only lists band musicians, with no mention of backing vocalists. It also fails to show "Kentucky Rain' as having band overdubs during this session, but the 8-track tape legend shows that piano and tambourine were overdubbed on the final master, which could have only been done at this session.
Backup vocal overdub details from this session comes from the logbook of Mary Holladay Pederson, who sang backing vocals at this session.
Chips Moman again brought in Mary Holladay and Sandra Posey, but also hired Donna Rhodes to sing backing vocals with them.
Some instruments, such as bass and left channel
organ effect (perfectly isolated), of the basic
track of 'Gentle on My Mind' were replaced
on March 20.
Most or all of the harmony vocal
is thought to have been provided by Ronnie Milsap
on the March 20 overdub session, but there is
a possibility that they were overdubbed by Joseph
Babcock on March 25.
Usually the backup vocal overdubs would be recorded on a single track of the 8-track tape, separate to other overdubs, but with 'Kentucky Rain' the backup and harmony vocals, along with piano and tambourine overdubs, were all recorded together on one track, as no more tracks were left. Details of the 8-track tape for 'Kentucky Rain' are as follows:
I - Brass (overdubbed March 18 1969)
II - Lo Strings (overdubbed March 18 1969)
III - Voices / Harmony / Piano / Tambourine (overdubbed March 20 1969)
IV - Hi Strings (overdubbed March 18 1969)
V - Drum (recorded February 19-20 1969)
VI - Vocal (recorded February 19-20 1969)
VII - Piano / Rhythm Guitar / Organ (recorded February 19-20 1969)
VIII - Bass (recorded February 19-20 1969)
Sessions
III lists 'My
Little Friend' as having backup vocals
overdubbed on January 23, but the session log
shows that as of February 4 (date
of the job number) no backup vocals had been
overdubbed*. You can just about hear the backing
singers during the guitar intro on the U.S. Male CD and the Almost In Love LP, as well as releases after 2007 (The Complete Masters etc.). They do not appear
on any 1990s releases.
